What Is Workers’ Compensation Insurance?

If you employ one or more employees, you are required by law to have workers' compensation insurance in Michigan.

This insurance covers your employee(s), should they get injured on the job or become ill due to their work; no matter who is at fault.

Additionally, workers compensation insurance pays the employee’s wages while they recover, and pays for medical and rehabilitation costs.

What Are The Types of Workers' Compensation Insurance?

Private

Individual-Self Insurance

Financially sound employers are typically “self-insured.” However, in order to qualify as a self-insured entity, you must receive permission from the Workers' Disability Compensation Agency to move forward.

If you undergo this process, you must prove that you’re financially sound and able to pay claims when they’re submitted.

Group Self-Insurance

This is when groups of employers in the same industry pool their workers' compensation premiums for the purpose of meeting their obligations under the Workers Compensation Act (WCA).

This provides an alternative to commercial insurance; however, the Workers Compensation Agency must review and approve this plan annually.
